MYRTIS McCULLOUGH Obituary

Myrtis Eloise McCullough was born on July 6, 1933 in Canton, Mississippi, the second oldest child of the late Sammie and Eva Mae Mallett. Myrtis completed her elementary education in Sallis, Mississippi before moving to Chicago, Illinois with her family as a teenager. Upon settling into the city, she later graduated from Wendell Phillips High School.

Myrtis accepted Christ at an early age and grew up attending Barlow Methodist Church while living in Sallis. In Chicago she frequented many churches and enjoyed listening to different pastors and choirs.

On July 25, 1954, Myrtis was united in holy matrimony to Charles McCullough and together they had five children: Charles, Wayne, Lisa, Dino, and Donna. The young family resided on Chicago's south side.

Myrtis found joy in the everyday. She loved reading interesting books, taking long drives exploring the cityscapes and countryside, and cooking some of her favorite meals. And when it came to dancing, she was a force to be reckoned with – whether she grooved solo, with her grandchildren, or leading the charge on the dance floor.  Myrtis had many skills and talents and held various professional roles, including shorthand typist, caterer, and bus driver. The roles she cherished most, however, were that of a friend and caregiver.

The heartbeat of the Lowden Homes community on 95th Street, Myrtis treated every child as her own, often treating them to weekend amusement park trips and always lending a listening ear. Her wisdom and kindness made her a beloved mother figure and her home was a welcoming haven for family and friends. Myrtis' dedication deeply impacted the community, earning her the 2013 Outstanding Community Achievement Award from the Mayfield Family Foundation and multiple recognitions from St. Ailbe Catholic School for her support of the Children's Band and Choir. A true friend, Myrtis enriched countless lives with her warmth and generosity.

After a lengthy illness, Myrtis transitioned from labor to reward on Thursday, May 23, 2024 at 11:43 AM. Her husband Charles, her three brothers: Leotha, Eutha (Gronny), and Sammie Mallett and her two children: Charles and Lisa McCullough all preceded her in death.

She leaves to cherish her memory: a very special granddaughter and caretaker, Canada McCullough; loving sons, Wayne and Dino McCullough; daughter, Donna McCullough; sister Emma Dean Cox; brother Jesse Mallett;  brother-in-law Samuel McCullough; 10 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren; a great-great grandson; and a host of wonderful family and friends.
